It's Not a Tea Party Until You Laugh at Someone's Suffering!

At a town hall held by Democrat Dan Lipinski earlier this month, a couple was relating a heart-wrenching story to their representative about why they feel health care reform is critical. Their story about how they believe the death of their pregnant 24-year-old daughter is directly attributable to her inability to afford insurance and rely strictly on emergency room care is incredibly tragic.

To add to the tragedy, the fine folks over at the Chicago Tea Party Patriots were more than happy to contribute. Catherina Wojtowicz, a good patriotic American who believes President Barack Obama is not a citizen, and her tea partiers were eager to shout her down and laugh at her loss.

But that doesn't mean that these tea baggers are cruel! They only did it because this woman was one of the operatives of that Kenyan in the White House who "go from event to event and [cry] the same story."

Otherwise, these actions would be inexcusable.

Dana Perino: No Terrorist Attacks During Bush's Term

Unbelievable quote of the day:

"We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term."

-- Dana Perino on FOX News, the only place where someone could get away with saying something so blatantly absurd.

Right-Wingers Disagree With a Woman, So She's Clearly a Hooker

Senator Mary Landrieu, a conservative Democrat from Louisiana, tepidly voted last weekend to allow debate on a health care bill in the Senate. This wasn't a vote in favor of health care reform, mind you, simply a vote to ALLOW THE SENATE TO DEBATE IT. She apparently came to this conclusion after striking a deal that would bring in $300 million in much needed federal aid to the State of Louisiana.

Voting to allow a debate was more than enough to freak out Republicans.

Straight away on Monday, Rush Limbaugh called her a prostitute.

Glenn Beck, already having a history of calling women he disagrees with prostitutes, joined in on the action multiple times in one day, calling her a "high-class prostitute" on his radio show, and then saying on his FOX News broadcast that "We know you're hooking, but you're just not cheap."

This meme also not-so-surprisingly found it's way over to Mark Halperin's blog over at Time. With a "funny" spin on the scene from "There's Something About Mary" where Cameron Diaz mistakes semen for hair gel. This memorable scene:

became this:

Get it? It's funny because she's a woman! And clearly, if you disagree with a woman, it must be because she has semen in her hair.

Consistency of Conservatism

Politicians, like most people, change their minds. They learn new information and their opinions (hopefully) evolve accordingly.

If you're a conservative, however, you just pretend like you've never believed any differently.

Glenn Beck's Detailed Incestuous Fantasy

The only thing better than reading Glenn Beck's highly detailed sexual fantasies with his sister from his book "The Real America: Messages From the Heart and the Heartland" is having them read to you. One of the juicy gems from the book: "I kissed my sister. First our lips met, seconds later our tongues. I ran my fingers through her silky hair and felt her soft skin. It was the height of passion and the moment I knew who my true love was . . . We knew we had done something so wrong, but at the same time, something so very right.”

Sean Hannity Admits "Mistake"

Stop the presses! On tonight's broadcast on FOX News, Sean Hannity admitted that Jon Stewart and The Daily Show was correct in their claim that they aired footage from the crowded 9/12 rallies while claiming it was the much smaller Bachmann rally from Thursday! What an exciting day!

FOX Uses Old Footage to Make Rallies Look Bigger

On last night's The Daily Show on Comedy Central, Jon Stewart pointed out yet another example of FOX's apparent abandonment of the term "news."

While discussing Michelle Bachmann's rally outside the Capitol last Thursday, Sean Hannity's show was running footage mixed in footage from Glenn Beck's 9-12 rally a couple months ago, making it look like attendance was much higher than it actually was.

Disappointing that the person who points this out is on Comedy Central...

Vote No on R71? You're Likely Homophobic.

The Washington Poll, a non-partisan polling project sponsored by the University of Washington, released a breakdown of who was expecting to vote for and against Referendum 71, the "Everything But Marriage" legislation in the days before the election.

Not so surprisingly perhaps, but nonetheless upsetting, is the fact that many of the opponents of R-71 voted against it at least partially because they are bigoted and disagreed with the statement that "Gays and lesbians kissing in public is no different than straight people kissing in public." If you cast your vote based on the type of porn you watch, I'm not sure there is much chance of convincing you that equality is a good thing.

The polling data essentially breaks down just like you would imagine:
  • Nearly 70% of Republicans opposed Ref 71
  • More than 80% of Democrats supported it
  • Voters who oppose I-1033 favor Ref 71
  • 61% of college graduates were in favor
  • Voters who have a gay friend were overwhelmingly in favor
  • Voters who believe being gay is a choice supported it
  • Majority of military members opposed R-71
But there were a few surprising details revealed:
  • Voters with a military member in the household were overwhelmingly in favor of R71
  • Both lower income and higher income voters were MORE likely than the middle class to approve it
This organization also released an report providing an interesting analysis of the evolution of the views of Washington State voters over the last three years, and shows that support for full domestic partnership has been dramatically increasing it's support each of the last three years.

Next up: marriage.

The Face of Anti-Gay Hatred

Last Tuesday night, one of the sources that I was going to in order to check the status of Maine's Question 1 was the website of the Portland Press Herald. After the networks reported that Question 1 had passed, and that the people of Maine had once again made gay marriage illegal, The Portland Press Herald had this photo from photographer John Ewing:

This woman participated in a campaign to strip committed couples of the right to enter into the same agreement people have enjoyed since the very beginnings of civilization itself.

And the expression on her face at the successful robbery of equality for thousands of couples? Pure elation.

It's disgusting.

Jon Stewart's Spot-On Glenn Beck Performance

Jon Stewart put in out of this world performance on The Daily Show last Thursday night that is definitely going to go down as one of the funniest moments in that show's history. He did an ENTIRE segment doing The Daily Show just as Glenn Beck does his cute little FOX News program.

In celebration of Glenn Beck getting his appendix removed, Jon Stewart starts the "11/3 Project" whose goal is to take us back to a time when Beck still had an appendix. "If they can take Glenn Beck's burst appendix to save his life, whose to say they can't take your healthy appendix tomorrow and eat it in front of you and your children."

Washington State's I-1033 on Rachel Maddow

Last night on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show, our little election in the corner of the country was given some attention...In particular, the absurdity of Tim Eyman's Initative 1033.

We'll hopefully know in just a couple hours that I-1033 went down in a flaming pile, even with the support of KIRO's resident monkey, Dori Monson.

Why You Should Care About Net Neutrality

Senator John McCain, bitter over his defeat in the most recent election, has decided to seek out vengeance by destroying the Internet as we know it with his hilariously titled "Internet Freedom Act."

Verizon, Comcast, AT&T and other companies would like to see the Internet transformed from its current level playing field into a "tiered-system" where services offered by those companies would be in the highest tier, alongside other companies that directly pay them fees to be included in the "prime results group." Sites like Facebook, YouTube and Hulu would be required to pay one of the above companies to prevent from having their bandwidth limited so that they would not be able to function. Those costs would certainly be passed along to the end user in a package like this:

This is all coming about because one of President Barack Obama's goals was to protect net neutrality and last week, the FCC voted unanimously to begin crafting rules to enforce net neutrality. McCain has enjoyed quite a cozy relationship with the telecommunications companies, but I'm sure his "principled stance" has nothing to do with their frequent donations to his campaigns, or with the installation of wireless towers by both AT&T AND Verizon on his expansive ranch. Also entirely coincidental is the fact that he has been the number one recipient of donations from telecommunications companies over the last two years.

Rachel Maddow talked about the damage that McCain's legislation would do on one of her show's last week:

Perhaps it's not the best course of action to put our trust into a guy, when asked whether he prefers PC or Macs, responds "Neither, am an illiterate that has to rely on my wife for all of the assistance I can get."

John McCain's "Internet Freedom Act" is most certainly double plus ungood.
